Lead Leaching
Once again, in the news we read “More than half of B. C.’s schools districts have unsafe lead levels in drinking water sources”. While this is not the first time this headline has appeared, this article in the Vancouver Sun was perhaps the most comprehensive article in years on the subject of Lead Leaching. With a new provincial government in place we can all hope the funding to, finally, address this issue of lead contaminated drinking water in our school’s drinking fountains, will follow.
Lead Leaching in our School’s Plumbing Systems
Copper Pipes used for domestic water supply in homes and building constructed prior to 1979 were made using copper that had some lead blended into the alloy. While that and the use of lead in solder was disallowed after 1979 some fittings (valves and faucets) continued to have some lead content until very recently.
Solution to Lead-Free Drinking Water in our Pipes
The CuraFlo Epoxy Lining Systems builds a protective barrier between the water and copper pipes. All fittings are replaced in the buildings plumbing system during this process with non – lead containing new fittings. This process provides the following advantages over pipe replacement:
- Minimally invasive, can be done with classes in progress
- Requires, very few, small openings to access pipes for the process
- Significant cost savings over pipe replacement, if asbestos is present the savings are larger
Problem is Solved!
No more leaching of lead or any heavy metals in to the water supply. Not only has the improved water quality been proven by independent water sample testing, one can simply tell without going to too much trouble as the water simply tastes much better with no metallic taste.
